Maths and Number Sense

Every learner develops mathematical understanding in their own way. My approach focuses on building secure foundations, developing confidence and helping learners recognise that maths can be meaningful, achievable and enjoyable.

I use practical resources, visual representations, carefully structured teaching and interactive programmes to help learners explore number relationships and develop increasingly flexible calculation strategies. Learning is matched to the individual’s current understanding, interests and pace, with opportunities to revisit, practise and apply skills in different contexts.

Number Sense Maths

I use Number Sense Maths to provide systematic, carefully sequenced teaching that helps learners develop secure factual fluency alongside a deeper understanding of number.

The highly visual resources, practical activities and structured teaching steps are particularly valuable for learners who benefit from concepts being broken down, represented in different ways and revisited regularly. I adapt the pace, presentation and amount of practice to each learner, ensuring that progress is based on understanding rather than pressure or memorisation alone.

Number Facts Fluency

The Number Facts Fluency Programme focuses on developing secure addition and subtraction facts alongside a strong understanding of number and number relationships.

Learners explore quantities visually and use practical resources, structured representations and carefully selected strategies to understand how numbers can be composed, partitioned and connected. This supports learners in moving beyond reliance on counting in ones and towards using known facts and relationships to solve unfamiliar calculations.

The programme teaches a defined set of addition and subtraction facts through carefully sequenced stages. Learners are supported to notice patterns, develop part–whole understanding and use strategies such as doubles, near doubles and making ten.

Animations, practical activities and progressive exercises provide different ways to encounter and consolidate each concept. During tuition, I select and adapt these resources according to the learner’s current understanding, allowing time for repetition, discussion and overlearning where needed.

The aim is to develop not only quicker recall, but also confidence, flexibility and a meaningful understanding of how numbers work.

Multiplication and Division Facts: Times Tables Fluency

The Times Tables Fluency Programme provides a structured approach to developing multiplication and division facts while strengthening understanding of multiplicative relationships.

Learners explore the meaning and structure behind multiplication facts before working towards increasingly secure recall. Visual models, patterns and related calculations help learners recognise connections between facts rather than experiencing each times table as a separate list to memorise.

Carefully planned rehearsal and retrieval are introduced in manageable stages, focusing on a small number of facts at a time. Multiplication and corresponding division facts are taught together so learners can develop a connected and flexible understanding.

I adapt the level of repetition, response time and presentation to ensure that practice remains supportive and achievable. For learners who experience anxiety around timed activities, the emphasis remains on security, progress and growing confidence rather than comparison or speed.

This approach helps learners build a strong foundation for wider mathematical learning while experiencing genuine success with multiplication and division.

A Personalised Approach

Number Sense Maths is never used as a one-size-fits-all programme. I identify the learner’s current understanding and begin at the point that will provide the most secure foundation—even when this means revisiting an earlier concept.

Learning may be supported through:

  • Practical and multisensory resources

  • Visual models and animations

  • Explicit teaching of calculation strategies

  • Carefully paced rehearsal and retrieval

  • Games and interactive practice

  • Repeated opportunities to apply learning

  • Activities personalised to the learner’s interests

  •

By combining the programme’s structured progression with responsive, individualised teaching, I help learners develop factual fluency, mathematical understanding and greater confidence in their own ability.

Interactive Maths Practice

Carefully selected digital programmes can provide engaging opportunities to revisit learning, develop fluency and recognise progress. Discover how I use NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars as part of a personalised and supportive approach to mathematical practice.
